Many of you will know that I have moved away from Newcastle (and also my beloved Northern teams), to take up a lecturing post at Hartpury University in Gloucester.
To continue supporting Britball in the North East I have two new team members of Gridiron Strong…. Welcome Jakki and Will!
Here is some background information about them both…
Jakki graduated from the University of Salford with a BSc Sports Rehabilitation in 2013. She is now furthering her professional skills by undertaking an MSc (Pre-reg) in Physiotherapy at Teesside University.
Jakki’s research interests lie in injury care and related prevention strategies.
Over the course of her career Jakki has worked as an Exercise Rehabilitation Instructor for the Army and RAF; as a Sports Rehabilitator with Lancashire Rugby; North England RUFC development U15s girls – Senior Women; Salford Reds Rugby League; Widnes Vikings RLFC and semi-pro football. Jakki is also part of the BAFA medical team.
Alongside her work as a clinician, Jakki has played both ice hockey and football at a high level. More recently she has taken up American Football, competing with the Teesside Steelers in the Sapphire Series and playing for the North in the Diamond series. She hopes to make the GB squad in the future.
Will is an experienced sports scientist. He holds a BSc in Sport and Exercise and is currently completing his MSc in Strength and Conditioning at Northumbria University where he has worked with the university S&C coaches to have input into the Mustangs programme. Will also holds a PT qualification and has vast experience in this field improving performance for runners and cyclists.
Will’s research interests lie in plyometrics and olympic lifting (particularly rate of force development).
Growing up Wills main sport was cricket but when he started university he joined the American Football team to play something more physical. With the Teesside Courgars he played Safety and Wide Receiver. At Northumbria he played inside and outside linebacker. However halfway through the season he suffered a serious injury and so had to step away from playing. Instead, Will moved to coaching the team and has since joined Coach Johnson at the North East Academy Giants as Defensive Coordinator.
Will has recently worked with the Teesside Steelers during their pre-season.
Expanding the Gridiron Strong team will help to increase the level of excellence in Britball player welfare in the U.K. This will allow the Gridiron Strong vision to be spread across the country rather than centralised in one area.
The same services will be available for the North (Will and Jakki) as they will be in the South (myself). If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to get in contact via email.
